This series of images and poems are reflections on my most familiar relationships, my connection to the communities I participate in, and facing the shadowy side of the self to find greater compassion. The 7 loves: storge, philia, agape, ludus, eros, philautia and pragma, are ancient Greek concepts. Respectively, they describe the love between the family or parents and child, close friendship, the love for strangers and the greater community, playfulness and flirtation, sexual love, the love towards ourselves, and the cultivation of long term love.
The imagery which accompanies each poem is a continuation of the themes found in my Pneuma series. What we practice is represented by repetition, the sky is emblematic of our perpetual connection and the color is our essence and inner light. Ludus, while it looks like a moon, is a pattern from the 2017 summer eclipse. Each palette and pattern is was chosen with attention to how I experience these different loves. A rainbow which arcs over us all. The bright dynamism of friendship and sexuality that livens us. The mischief of flirting with the unknown. The miracle of our becoming and the comfort of a long term companion to come undone with. These are 7 Loves.
